Frequently asked questions
Is an N403 required to work as a gateman on a construction site?
On large commercial sites — Tier 1 and Tier 2 contractors — gatemen are typically required to hold both a CSCS card and an NPORS N403 Vehicle Marshal ticket. The gateman role is a qualified position, not general security. Requirements vary by site and principal contractor.
How much does the NPORS N403 course cost?
Typically £150–£300 for the course plus NPORS card fee. Prices vary by provider and region. Some employers fund the training as part of site onboarding.
Can I do the N403 without any prior experience?
Yes. There are no formal prerequisites. A basic understanding of construction site operations is beneficial but not required. The course covers everything from first principles.
Is an N403 the same as a Banksman ticket?
Related but distinct. Banksman refers specifically to guiding lifting operations (cranes, excavators). Vehicle Marshal (N403) covers road vehicle and HGV movement. On site, the roles often overlap — check what your employer requires.
